Introduction :

A transformer is one of the most important electrical devices used in power systems. It plays a vital role in the generation, transmission, and distribution of electrical energy. Transformers help in changing voltage levels efficiently without changing the frequency.


Definition of Transformer:

                      A transformer is a static electrical device that transfers electrical energy from one circuit to another using the principle of electromagnetic induction, while maintaining the same frequency


Working Principle of Transformer:

             1.The working principle of a transformer is Mutual Induction.

            2. When an alternating current (AC) flows through the primary winding, it produces a varying magnetic flux in the transformer core. 

          3.  This changing magnetic flux induces an electromotive force (EMF) in the secondary winding. 

            4. As a result, electrical energy is transferred from the primary side to the secondary side.

Main Parts of a Transformer:


1. Primary Winding – Connected to the input power supply

2. Secondary Winding – Supplies output power

3. Magnetic Core – Provides a low reluctance path for magnetic flux


Types of Transformers:

                 Based on application and construction, transformers are classified as:

1. Step-Up Transformer – Increases voltage level

2. Step-Down Transformer – Decreases voltage level

3. Distribution Transformer – Used in distribution systems

4. Power Transformer – Used in transmission systems

5. Auto Transformer – Uses a single winding


Applications of Transformers:
